Benicia King is a photographer exploring southern Black culture through themes of faith and family history. With her strength resting in portraiture, King is able to navigate fashion with accessories, womenswear, and outerwear.

Seattle-born, raised in Grambling, Louisiana, by a Los Angeles native single mother, King’s editorial work is rooted in both childhood and adult experiences. She recreates lived moments through cinematic scenes that balance control and spontaneity and styling based on church attire. She often casts family members alongside professional models and actors, blending personal history with on-site art direction. Through this approach, she merges her expertise in portraiture, event photography, and fine art to craft emotionally compelling fashion narratives.

King’s artistic vision is guided by Psalm 139:11-12:

"I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—
but even in darkness, I cannot hide from you.
To you, the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you."

This passage informs her signature interplay of light and shadow, reinforcing her belief in embracing the full spectrum of human nature.

King is currently pursuing a Master’s in Fashion Photography at the School of Visual Arts. She earned her BA in Photography and Entrepreneurship through experiences at Seattle Central, the University of Southern California, and Grambling State University. In 2023, she received the Take Notice Fund from the National Performance Network, supported by the Ford Foundation. Her commissions and exhibitions span the U.S. and Italy, with collaborations including the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, Masur Museum, Crescenzi & Co, the New Orleans African American Museum, Stella Jones Gallery, Superposition Gallery, Human Resources LA, and more.
